“It should be self evident that the president must be in charge and his subordinates must be loyal to him. Any public communications regarding the chain of command and particular the president simply cannot not be tolerated by those wearing the uniform. It is a simple concept that the senior officer bears responsibility for the words and conduct of the subordinates. It is simply another thing to communicate your displeasure with the president’s policy directly to the president. Our civilian leadership makes policy and military leadership executes the policy objectives of the executive branch. It is that simple
“I am really not sure what was said or in what context, but I’m confident the president felt he had some of his very senior leadership out of control and needed to flex his muscle. The last thing our men and women in uniform need is for controversy to exist publicly between the president and the upper echelons of leadership.”
