LEGO and other construction toys for modeling

Our current experiments – let’s call it “play” – suggest that the ease of use of LEGO makes it pretty suitable for rapid modeling of geographic (natural) and human-made (artifiicial) environments. We had suspected that modeling underground features would be very problematic – and have since learned that transparent and translucent pieces are available, including the baseplates which are often used as a foundation for larger LEGO constructions.

We’re still stumbling through this, so we’re particularly interested in suggestions for more good LEGO resources.
