The slideshow which follows is a preliminary attempt to compile a more useful visual data set of the events in London on 7 July 2005. We’ve got a few things in mind, after the jump:

  1. Because, for ourselves and our readers, it’s our hope to use visual information: infographics ((See Information graphics (Wikipedia entry, and the work of Edward Tufte, his four books, and no to be missed, EdwardTufte.com – the Tufte-moderated user discussions are an outstanding resource)), charts, diagrams, sparklines ((Sparkline, an explanation (Wikipedia); some tools to generate them: (a)  Edward Tufte forum: Sparkline theory and practice; (b) Sparklines for Excel®;  (c) Excel Blog – Sparklines in Excel (d) Sparklines Excel Add-in – TinyGraphs (e) Sparkline PHP Graphing Library  (f) Joe Gregorio | BitWorking | Projects | Sparklines.   to inform our writing, make it more accurate and provide better intelligence. By intelligence we’re referring to the use of “intelligence” as “actionable information” – information which can be used as an aid in decision-making.
  2. To learn how to better interpret visual information. One of the images in the set of seven below contains an error in the metadata. We’re interested in knowing how noticeable it is to others.
  3. Because it’s now possible, via smart phones and other technologies, to transmit images in approaching-real-time, we hope to investigate how these technologies have been, or can better  be, useful during a crisis. An image with time-stamp and geo-tag depicting a broken levee or blocked intersection doesn’t require  specialized training or engineering or surveying skills, and isn’t subject to the errors and delay which can be unavoidable given harsh weather, noise, and perhaps an improvised “command post” in a crowded, unlit, rainy tent.
  4. We’d like submissions or suggestions for any other public-domain images which explain, describe, or illuminate the July 2005 London bombings (and, of course, we want to hear about other subjects which you’d like covered in words, images, or both.
